I started my career designing newsstand magazines on a range of subjects including football, music and videogames. I swapped the newsstand for customer publishing, working as creative director for a couple of local media agencies, before going it alone – managing my own client base and providing design and consultancy services for other agencies. I cover a range of design skills but documents with lots of pages, lots of words and interesting images that I enjoy working on the most.
There’s an energy and enthusiasm (and lots of happy faces) about the place that really appealed to me. The company clearly puts its clients first – producing material that is of obvious benefit to their businesses and their audiences. I admire their professionalism and creativity but, most importantly, they have a knack of employing, and working with, genuinely decent people.
A good design project gives your brain a thorough workout while also triggering creative responses. I love digging deep into a brief to solve problems and explain a subject that might seem difficult at first. If I can bring complex information to life, draw the reader in and engage with them (while meeting all of a client’s objectives) then I’m happy.
Since my knees no longer appreciate me playing football I do lots more walking instead, particularly if there’s woodland with fascinating fungi to explore. If my budding young mycologist son joins me, even better. I also love music and catch as many small local gigs as possible, with the occasional trip to Bristol for bigger acts.
